Greece Athens Gay

Athens Relax (Xouthou 8, Omonia; +30-21/522-8800; open daily 1-8 p.m., closed Sun)
Sauna, steamroom, private cabins, bar and resting areas. The place doesn’t seem to get a whole lot of action, and there have been complaints about rent boys, but the clientele has fairly mixed ages.

Star Cinema (Aghiou Constantinou St, off Omonia Square; open 9 a.m.-3 a.m.)
This is one of those classic cinema set-ups, with straight movies and a mostly gay audience, with plenty of action in every corner, especially in the afternoon. The old two-floor movie theatre has a few touches of the glamorous 1940s, although it looks as if it mightn’t have been cleaned since then. Busiest 11 a.m.-2 p.m. when the Greeks have an extended lunch, but not the most refined of experiences. Beware the rent boys.

Corfu Island
Almyros Beach (Almyros, 40km north of Corfu Town near Acharavi)
The beach here is 8km long, and you need to be at its easternmost edge; the nudist and gay area starts 500m or so past George’s Tavern. It’s a little out of the way, but in the high season (June-Sept) attracts randy locals and some tourists. Dishes up few hunky treats; expect older men. At other times of the year this beach can be deserted.

Mykonos
Hotel Elysium (School of Fine Arts Area, Mykonos, Greece; +30/22890/23952; fax +30/22890-23747; www.lodgings.gr/cyclades/myconos/chora/elysium/home.htm, elyysium@otenet.gr; EUR 120-380)
A large, uncluttered property built in the local whitewashed style, with many rooms boasting dazzling views of Mykonos town and harbor. All rooms have air-conditioning, Internet access, phone, satellite TV and safe deposit box, and the superior rooms even have a personal computer and webcam. The property is stunning, and nude bathing is allowed in the pool. While this is predominantly a hotel, the recently upgraded facilities include hydro-massage, fully equipped gym, Jacuzzi, steamroom and dry sauna which can be very cruisy.

Super Paradise Beach
The supposedly gayest beach on Greece’s gayest island lets it all hang out, while not specifically catering to nudists. Slip on your sarong for either café/bar on the periphery, but feel free to get raw down on the sand with all the other hot bodies. While the main part of the beach offers endless eye candy, the real cruising occurs in the rockier, more deserted areas to the right of the beach (when facing the sea). Despite its reputation, however, many might find Paradise something of a disappointment: crowded, commercialized, increasingly straight and often noisy with music. Definitely not what it used to be in the good old days…

Elia Beach
You can reach this beach by bus from Mykonos harbor. It doesn’t have the reputation of Paradise, but is actually somewhat better. The gay part of the beach is one the right (as you face the sea) towards the rocky area. The beach itself is nice, as are the guys, who go mostly nude and sometimes engage in action in the rocks.
