Overview
A focus group is a structured, 60-minute session designed to help the facilitator (IO psychologist) gain a deep understanding of a specific role or culture and the requirements for success within an organization. By engaging with knowledgeable team members, the IO psychologist can identify the critical traits necessary for a person to excel in their position and/or environment.
Why are Focus Groups Important?
The primary goal is to gather anecdotal information and insights that are often missing from standard job descriptions or corporate documentation. These sessions focus on real-world experiences to determine what actually works and what does not work within a specific role or culture.
Who Should Participate?
Anyone who is knowledgeable about the role can be a participant. This typically includes:
- Current high performers who are already successful in the role.
- Managers and supervisors who oversee the position.
- HR personnel who understand the organizational requirements.
What to Expect During the Session
- Format: A 60-minute call with up to 10 participants and one facilitator (IO psychologist) over an online call through Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc. We recommend participants be prepared to turn their camera on to promote a productive conversation.
- Discussion Topics: The facilitator will ask questions regarding daily tasks, responsibilities, problem-solving, decision-making, and how learning happens on the job.
- Employee Comparison: Participants are often asked to describe the differences between a successful employee and someone who struggles in the role.
- Flexibility: While there is a standard set of questions, the facilitator may ask follow-up questions or skip certain items based on the information provided during the conversation.
