  • Reduction in turnover

Challenge

Hiring manager’s falling “in like” with candidates

Mike Leckie-Ewing, the VP of Organizational Development, has been using Berke since 2005. In the past, local managers received reports on all applicants and would determine who to invite to interviews. At times, based on a recommendation, a stand out resume, or great experience, managers would invite “low fit” candidates to interview.

Often, once meeting them, they would “fall in like” with the candidates and hire them despite Berke suggesting that the candidate was not a good fit for the role. Inevitably, “low fit” individuals who were hired did not succeed in the job.

Solution

HR pre-screens candidates with Berke

After witnessing the results of hiring “low fit” candidates, Mike decided to alter their process. Rather than filtering all candidates to local managers, HR now pre-screens candidates. The team is diligent in their application of the Berke Job Fit rating. HR does not share any “low fit” candidates with managers.

Results

More successful employees and reduction in turnover

After introducing the HR pre-screening step, turnover at Wayne Homes significantly improved. As roles evolve, the team routinely reviews and refines Job Fit Profiles. This practice ensures that the accuracy of the Job Fit rating.

Usage of Berke reports is not restricted to hiring. When there is conflict, managers refer to employees’ Berke reports to help them understand employee behavior and to formulate a better approach for resolution. Berke is a critical component of Wayne Homes’ hiring success and an important aspect of their employee relations.
